What you can find out from the state varies from state to state. Florida will only tell if someone is currently in prison. Other states will only tell if a person has been released from prison. Also, if you check at the state level - you probably will miss any info on time spent in local jails and will not see if they have been sued or have any legal judgements against them.

Some of the background check firms are used by state agencies to check on criminal histories in other states.

I would suggest you start by getting her social security number. Tell her you want to give her a present - a US Saving Bond.

3 years ago when I worked at Corrections, we were looking for help in finding people who disappearred from prison /probation /parole. Found a company that could take a social security number and search their copy of records combined from all states and the federal government. They could tell you every place the person had ever owned, where they had lived, any criminal background, their neighbors, who the person had lived with, the background of the person(s) they had lived with, licenses, warrants, judgements, etc and etc.

All it took was a social security number and less than 5 seconds. And a monthly subscription fee of $1,000. The state Corrections director said there was no need to get the service - that what's the employee were being paid to find (and it took how many months by hand?).

If you have doubts about this person - can you trust they told you the truth when they said they were from Arkansas? Find a firm that will search all public records - from all states.

Even then, there is a difference between convictions and being an unidentified "wanted person".

Felony records are free to the public IF they are convicted or ever served any time. Common records for misdemeanors or pending charges are not available to the public. Criminal background checks can be gotten for a fee. There are numerous sites that offer this.

Or go to your local Police Department. They will give you a criminal background if you enlist as an "employer". Again, the fee may be $10.

Sure, call a company that does background checks for pre-employment and they will be able to do this as well.

You are sneaky. You are invading somebody's privacy. I would not suggest you do that, because you might loose her for good. Just ask her.
