Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Begin by first clicking on the Start Button and then click on Turn Off Computer.

Now click on the Turn Off red colored icon to shut down your computer system.

It is best to wait between 15 to 30 seconds before you turn your system back on.

Turn on your computer and start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.

Restart your computer again and begin tapping the F8 key a brief second or two later.

When the Windows Advanced Options Menu appears, Choose the Safe Mode option and hit Enter.

Windows will now boot your computer up in Safe Mode.

I personally think spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) and avast (http://www.avast.com/) are some of the best [overlap and download both just to be safe]. They are both free, and avast is also an anti-virus program. You might want to look at AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1) as well because I've heard that is good too. Check download.com for some user and editors reviews of the programs. Good luck!
-Oh and if you do download Avast I would set up a bootscan, it runs the virus scanner next time you restart and before the programs can load.

Honestly, backup your critical files that you don't want to lose, then format and reload Windows. Spyware issues can take hours to wipe out, and then you'll either totally hose your system or they'll just keep coming back.
After you format and reload Windows, the first thing that you should do is install the free ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG Free antivirus.

i've seen too many spyware infections and wasted countless hours removing them, its not even worth trying to remove bad infections anymore.
