Believe it or not, it is not unusual for the elderly population to be hospitalized with severe constipation overnite. They are given enema's and stool softners such as mag citrate, kayexelate, or fleets phospha soda until the impaction is out.
The constipation is followed up by an xr of the abdomen usually the next day and then if everything is ok, we send them home and instruct them and their families on how to avoid a similar situation. We tell them to give them plenty of water, fresh fruits and veggies and we usually start them on a stool softner such as senokot or colace. It would be nice if ER nurses had the time to smell up their whole ER giving enema's, but to be honest about it, they are too busy saving heart attac victims, bleeders and managing more serious problems. I will not say they do not give enema;s in the ER, but usually it is more cost effective and humane to send the pt to the floor where she can be humanely, gentley dis impacted.

this rarely requires a hospital stay...most people are treated with suppositories or laxatives...only when the condition does not respond to those treatments would she require a doctors help, and that is usually done on an outpatient basis

I wouldn't think so. There are places other than hospitals that do colonic cleansings, and it's a quick procedure.
