I believe the forks are set on the left hand side of the plate. the forks are as follows most outward fork is the salad fork;the middle fork is for the main meal and the third fork is for dessert.

Yes, at a formal dinner party, you put the salad fork (possibly chilled) on the left side next to the dinner fork. If you serve an appetizer than you have to have three forks.
Just follow this rule.
The fork you use first is on the very outside on the left side of the plate.
