The big fork is for the main dish - the little fork is for dessert and the other fork is for salad.

I believe the forks are set on the left hand side of the plate. the forks are as follows most outward fork is the salad fork;the middle fork is for the main meal and the third fork is for dessert.

Yes, at a formal dinner party, you put the salad fork (possibly chilled) on the left side next to the dinner fork. If you serve an appetizer than you have to have three forks.
Just follow this rule.
The fork you use first is on the very outside on the left side of the plate.

forks always go on the left side of the plate...usually the outer fork is for appetizers, then salad, with the inner most fork used for entrees
