Maybe he thought that he was over his girlfriend but found out that he wasn't. Talking to you probably made him realize that he still has feelings for his ex. But it can also be that he's afraid of something new. If you really like this guy then you need to talk to him and ask him why he led you on just to drop you like that. I don't think it's right at all for him to do that to you.

There must be a reason he wants to get back with his Ex. Show him that you can be that much better for him. If he is into you and wasn't using you to make his ex jealous, he will realize that you are the better choice.
