I've had a craving for chalk for awhile now and am wondering if I am the only one out there that has ever craved this odd item. I know I'm probably lacking some kind of vitamin. Does anyone out there know if there is any significance to this craving?

Chalk is calcium carbonate, so there's a good chance you're low on calcium. You can get it in a number of forms, but plain old Tums antacids (calcium bicarbonate, which is why it neutralizes stomach acid -- same chemical layout as sodium bicarbonate) are a good and tasty way to add it to your diet.

Sounds to me like the disorder "pica". Patients with this disorder have a craving for non-nutritive things like chalk, sand, dirt, etc. I once had a patient with pica who had eaten a nail.

Look up pica on a medical website for more info - something like webmd.com.

it's called pica. Are you pregnant? This happens a lot during pregnancy. As pp stated, go see your dr. You are definitely lacking in something.
