I think its because we see the results of death.
When we see something that died, and what happens to the body after life has left it, it scares us because we don't know what happened to the "life" that was there. Do we continue to exist? Do we stop existing? We have too many questions and so to calm our fears, be take on beliefs in immortality and the afterlife.

Believing in an afterlife gives us hope for something after we are dead.
To be a non-believer would mean everything you have accomplished and fought so hard fro was for nothing.
For many this world is a miserable place that is cruel and prejudice toward the have-nots.
An afterlife gives us hope for justice.

Just wait until we get there then you can tell me if there is a hell or not. Let me know what you believe then. You'll have to scream really loud though because I won't be able to hear you over the others screams and ganishing of teeth. Oh and I'm making sure I am somewhere else, where the tears will be wiped from my eye.

Not everyone believes in an afterlife. No one says you have to.

Because it hurts when someone dies and you have to deal with everything they were being gone from the universe.
I bet it would be nice to think my loved ones are hanging out in paradise - but sadly, I don't believe that and it really sucks.
It's wishful thinking brought on by pain, suffering, and the agony of grief.

Because as humans, we always wonder "what's next?" (like a big dinner when you're on your 10th entree and you feel like your stomach is going to explode)
sOoO after we die, the living don't see the dead bodies anymore, so they wonder what happens-- because time doesn't seem to stop on our accord.

I'm still looking, but somewhere in the Scriptures it says that God has put eternity in their minds or hearts. So God has fixed the thought of eternity within us.
