it seems they will do anything to be americans but still speak spanish (even when they are fluent in english) and drive around with mexican flags on their cars. If mexico is so great why are they here?

It's really no different than other cultures. Mexicans are just the "hot topic" right now so it's more noticeable. Plus, in some parts of the country they have not been here as long as the other immigrants who still proudly fly their flags and speak their native languages. Have you ever been to Chinatown? Have you been in Italian sections of town and heard 3rd, 4th or 5th generations of Italians speaking Italian? They have their own restaurants, their own foods. Their own holidays. Their own celebrations. Look at the Greeks and the Greek Festivals that we love to attend. Who in this forum would attend a Mexican Festival? Not many. The Mexicans are condemned because they want to celebrate their heritage. It's not as easy to pinpoint it with the Irish, Scottish or British because they already spoke English upon arriving here. They still fly their flags. My friend just married a Scotsman and they have his flag flying outside their home. Nobody in their neighborhood cares but they would if it was a Mexican flag. Why is it ok to fly a Scottish flag but not a Mexican one? btw, her husband who came here legally is now "illegal" by over-staying his work visa because he committed the crime of falling in love with an American girl and wanting to marry her. He is not singled out. He is not harassed. He is not called ugly names. Why? Because he blends in better. It's blatant racism and nothing more. My husband is a citizen of Mexican descent and a very successful and fully bilingual businessman. We still here ugly comments walking down the street, usually from poor ignorant and uneducated rednecks. To try to suppress the culture and background of the Mexican people would mean that we also need to close down Chinatown and all shops specifically catering to any other culture of the MANY that comprise this great nation. We can't say one is acceptable and one is not. That's just wrong.

Hello, Hear me. I'm Mexican. I don't have mexican flags or stickers in my car or outside my house. Still, I'm proud to be Mexican, is my heritadge.
And If I didn't admit it, I would still be criticized by some
I speak english, I've been a Manager, a Supervisor, and I follow the american culture, I love hamburguers, though I don't eat that many, don't wanna gain weight. I observe your/our hollidays, though I'm criticized for standing in the crowd among whities with my family and my american flag. I speak english to my kids, but some how all this seems pointless, just because there's always someone who won't see this as enough effort to be part of this... how do we call it? norhtamerican-caucasian society (I can't call it american society, because I'm already american, since mexico is in america).
Mexico is great, their people are warm friendly, but is ruled by the high european descendant class. The moneys those politics still goes to their accounts in Europe. For so many years I told myself that it was more secure to be in the US, now I'm starting to doubt that, thanks again to those pea-brains racist instigators.

Are you listening, princess?

Little do you know about Mexican immigrants. Not only did we embrace the Anglo-Saxon traditions but we learned some German because we were in a part of the USA with LOTS of German and Swedish people who, guess what? Had parents and grandparents move here but they still speak German and Swedish, they decorated their houses according to their heritage, etc. Just go look at Lindsborg, Kansas (a/k/a "Little Sweden") where every house seems to sport an orange wooden horse as a decoration! How "American" is that?

interesting, my grandparents were immigrants to this country. my father was first generation born in the US. My grandparents refused to teach my dad their native language. Why? Because they were Americans now, and therefore you speak english. My grandfather said it was the only way to be an american. why would you want to come to this country and not become an american? that was something my grandparents could not conceive. and no, if the parents do not like the duplicity of language then they can stop speaking spanish entirely and speak only english.

They make more money here. on one news cast a reporter said " in Mexico they could earn only $2.00 dollars a day, in USA could earn &200 a week." They place a high value on family[including extended family] and their "Heritage". Second and third generation become more American in their attitudes. Same was true for many European families.only not when it came to their language.they switched to English.

they dont need to embrace our culture, its not the "in thing to do" anymore. I hope its not as bad as some arabs Ive known and worked with. they come over and work in the battery factories in michigan for a year or so to get us citizenship, then they get some kind of job and send all the money home till they get enough to leave the states forever, they told me they hate just about everything about us here, and cant wait to leave. I say, go ahead and leave.

this is a generalization!!! i'm willing to bet you don't have a whole lot of mexican friends to compare this to. what's wrong with embracing their culture as well? and what about all the other people of various culture who drive around with their flags hanging from rearview mirrors; and those who speak their native tongue even when they speak english fluently? how are you only aware of the mexican people when there are so many other immigrants? come on, now. wake up.

Because they are proud of their culture and traditions. What is your culture? And how would you describe it? The Mexican culture has nothing to do why Mexican are here. It is because of the government and the poverty not because they are ashamed of their culture. Just like the Italians, Puerto Ricans,Irish and so on and so forth. They celebrate their culture and are very proud of it. Why are you focusing on Mexicans?
