They used grass, leaves, their fingers and anything else to wipe their butts just like I used in my advanced military training. You just don't worry about things like that in war as you probably walk around with your pants half filled just from being afraid of dying.

books, leaves, toilet tissue bid come out in the late 1800's, but it was thought to be too fancy and was used a stationary. corncobs worked great.
