Meditation and self-hypnosis tend to be different flavours of a very similar state.
With a structured outline for your session, self-hypnosis can be orchestrated by your conscious mind to actually achieve particular outcomes. Mainstream forms of Meditation tend to be focused on simply achieving a beneficial state that has a progressive and positive effect upon your levels of anxiety.
If you are looking at overcoming anxiety or phobias, then self-hypnosis is a far, far more applicable means of achieving this in my opinion and experience.
I am of course deeply biased, but the best selling self-hypnosis book "The Secrets of Self-Hypnosis: Harnessing The Power of Your Unconscious Mind" is the best structured way to learn how to use it that I have encountered in 20 years of studying it. I am the author of that so let me give you some others too choose from too:
The Power of Your Subconscious Mind By Joseph Murphy.
Self-Hypnosis By Brian Alman.
Through The Open Door By Kevin Hogan.
All are great ways of learning more about how to communicate with your subconscious mind when you achieve self-hypnotic states.

Meditation is better than self hypnosis. Meditation clears the mind and raise your energy level. When I'm too tired, I don't meditate because I usually fall asleep. It's better not to do in your room. Try sitting cross legs on a cushion on the floor in other rooms. You'll also meditate better if you don't have much food in your stomach. To metabolize food, the body needs to work a little harder therefore making you tired. Empty stomach is better for meditation. If you can, do 2 hours a day. Just as the physical body needs food, the soul needs food as well. Meditation is like food for the soul. 2 hours every day will make you feel fresh, balanced and whole.
There are many books in Amazon.com regarding meditation. I usually use the technique of the breath- being aware of the breath going in and going out. Good luck.

If you're familiar with hypnosis, then you've no doubt heard of Master Hypnotist Steve G. Jones. His book, "Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis" has been voted as the best hypnosis course ever made. The book is also available in electronic format at: http://www.hypnosistocontrol.net
If you want to get an edge in everyday communication and lead other people towards your goals this is a must read.

Self hypnosis is supposed to have a more lasting effect on the mind than meditation although meditation provides more immediate relief.
I like the book Inspiration by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer.

Meditation is your best bet for anxiety. It's ok to fall asleep, that means you were successful. I bought meditation CDs and put them in my walkman and wear headphones to bed.
Meditation is not as freaky as self-hypnosis. You can go to any
psychic store or a book store and find many to choose from.
Don't feel strange about going into a psychic store. They sell
all types of items, not just controversial psychic things.
Also, before bedtime, try to bathe or shower in lavender bath products, spray lavender on your bedding. It has a very
relaxing effect. That's why you can find so many lavender scented things in the baby department of most stores.

Johnny,
I have been meditating for about 12 years now. For physical relaxation, it can't be beat. It takes years to get good at it. I go for up to 45 minutes and afterwards fell so relaxed, it's like I've slept for 12 hours, no kidding.
BUT, for anxiety, or depression ( I have both ) NOTHING beats CHINESE ACUPUNCTURE. The Chinese method works, the others DO NOT- for up to 6 months of relief from one treatment !
It doesn't hurt either. Try it out and let me know what you think ! Good Luck !

Well, if you fall asleep, that probably means that your anxiety has abated. Kind of hard to have an anxiety attack while sleeping. I also would not recommend caffiene, it can trigger/worsen anxiety. If you keep it up you'll eventually be able to stay awake longer for it.

sleep is a refuge that ur brain takes to safeguard itself from anxiety. so don't worry about falling asleep. it is a good sign.
i'd reccomend medidation. i don't have a book i consult, i learnt it from my yoga teacher. i can just tell u how to do it.
sit cross leggedwith ur back straight against the wall, let ur hands drop by side the back of the palm. make a circle with ur thumb and the second finger. count ur breath. make sure everytime u breathe in ur stomach goes in, and everytime u breathe out, ur stomach too comes out. once u r focussed on ut breathing, slowly recite the smallest prayer u know--maybe the 'our father', as many times as u can. but u will have to recite it out a little loud, so that u can hear it.
it shud help in anxiety. really wish u cud locate a good yoga teacher. that wud help. all the best.

Self Hypnosis if you can get your mind to think your healed then you will be. Whatever the mind sees will become reality.
