If you own a Beetle get use to people loving to tell you about the Porsche motor they had in there Beetle, but honestly it doesn't make any since to use a Porsche motor unless your just looking to burn cash(and a lot). As well most people that don't know about VW ,but want to inform you about them just the same, will tell you all about the Porsche stuff, but most of them don't have a clue what their talking about. Most of the time what they think is a "Porsche" motor is really just a modified VW motor. So, to do this swap you would need to do is find a air-cooled Porsche motor, which there out in cars like the 356(probably your best fit), 911 and 912(early ones had motors your could use, think they later went to 6cly and are to big) and the 914(join project with VW and the same basic 4cly motor was used in the vw bus, 411, 412, but are much cheaper. Known as the type 4 motor, which they are doing a lot of high hp stuff with lately ). There maybe other motors you can use out there, but I'm by no means an expert on Porsche so I'll leave that to someone that knows them better.
So, I mean sure you could do it, but why? Not like spare porsche engines are cheap to start with and god knows how much money it would cost to get one in the shape you would want. When you could do the same thing at a fraction of the cost with VW parts.

I know it's done all the time. By hubby has a 65 and hangs out at the VW shop a lot and one of the guys there has a porshe engine. Since I have no techinal idea...call your local VW shop (not the one at the shiny new VW lot but find a local guy that works on old ones) he will know!

Yes indeed. You don't need to make any cuts or adjustments on the chasis. But don't expect to keep the same gearbox.
Here in Malta we have some of them and they are really fast. The only problem they faced is because you need to install a radiator in it.

the porshe motor is actually a pancake late model bus or type 3 motor. they made the bus with the 1.7 or the 2.0 and around the same time porshe came out with the 914. that motor will go into any type 1,2,or 3. thats why you hear "i gotta porshe motor in my bug!" its the same motor when you take all of the motor tin and acc. off the block.
