I'm going to consult a doctor in the morning. I just have random questions here that I thought I 'd ask your opinion on. Im 25. I have only 2 brothers. My first brother is 15 & he has brain cancer. My other brother had it when he was 9. Do you think I should get checked? Do you think it's very likely I would get it too? What are the chances my children would have it? My one aunt is a nurse & she suggested that I don't have any more children. I have 2 now. I understand that you all aren't doctors, but just tell me your thoughts please.

You should get checked to serve two purposes. The first, being that you will know if you have any cancer. Secondly, this will definetly ease your mind. 10% of cancer is inherited, 90% is caused by what you eat, drink, breath and come in contact with. The Health Awareness Foundation put out two brochures that explain this indepth in easy to understand terms (http://healthawarenessfoundation.org/resources.html).
Cancer is caused 90% of the time by "free radicals" which are effected counteractively by antioxidants. "The amount of antioxidants that you maintain in your body is directly proportional to how long you will live" -Dr. Richard Cutler, former Head of the Anti-Aging Research Institute, at the National Institutes of Health. It is now recommended to have 7-12 servings of fruits and vegetables a day to maintain minimum healthy antioxidant level.

Examples of "free radicals": sunlight, pollution, medications, dry cleaning, airline travel, food additives, microwaves, household cleaners, pesticides, 10 quadrillion free radicals in 1 cigarette.

Examples of antioxidants: Vitamin A, C, D, K, B12, B6, etc. Riboflavin (B2), Folate, Niacin, Biotin, Lycopene, Zeaxanthin, Beta Carotene.

Look up "free radicals" and antioxidants on www.wikipedia.org for more info (look up the examples as well).

I'm very sorry to hear about your brothers. The only thing worse than having cancer is being a kid with cancer, I think.

But just because they have or had it, that doesn't guarantee you will too. I come from a family with a lot of cancer. My mother died of breast cancer when I was a kid. My older sister died of ovarian cancer a few years ago. She had already had another kind of cancer that had gone into remission. Another sister is in remission from Hodgkins. (Yes, I'm from a large family.) And my oldest sister had a biopsy about 10 years ago, where they found pre-cancerous growths. I keep thinking my time will come, but so far I've been lucky.

You could get genetic testing done, but that's a double-edge sword. First of all, what if it's positive? Could you handle hearing that, for your sake and your kids? And records do leak out. Insurance companies won't touch you after you've tested positive for something like that, even if you never actually get cancer!

If I were you, I'd just enjoy the life I have, and not spend it worrying about something that might or might not ever happen. But be financially prepared for anything that comes up. If nothing else, you could eventually use the money for a nice retirement vacation, right?

hi friend

some types of brain tumors need a family check (the type hemingioblastoma is the main one that need).

So, I advice you to go to a neurosurgeon and discuss the matter with him providing that all the data regarding your brothers' tumors be available to the doctor, he can ask you some relevant questions and examine your nervous system

other steps will depend on the results of that and the type of tumors.

hereditary is important aspect ... but after your visit to the doctor, (I realy think you have nothing).. don't live a nightmare... it is not necessory you will get that... live your life completely normal..

you can have any number of children (I only know one neurological disease that will be transferred to the children which is definitaly not yours .. its another story not related to brain tumors .. and that families are already known and been followed up).

Be happy ... cheer up ..

yours,

Ammar

i think that cancer is genetic and that you have a greater risk of having cancer...do you have any other sisters?? ummm..it could just be a wierd thing where only your brothers get the cancer and you're a carrier of the gene...if you want to be safe and you can afford it i would go and get checked or at least talk to your doctor about the risk involved and what you should do to prevent you and children from having cancer...
