You know what, you sound so much like me it's not even funny. But really it's just an excuse. I completely agree that cutting isn't any worse than smoking. It probably does less damage to your body, and it's definitely less addictive. But it's still addictive, and it still hurts your body. Just because smoking is socially acceptable doesn't mean it's a good thing to do, and it definitely doesn't mean that cutting is a good thing to do.
Yes, cutting does work. For a while. And then the cuts stop hurting and it all comes rushing back. So you cut again. And again, and again, until there's no where left to cut. It's not a permanent solution. It doesn't solve your problems any more than going out and getting drunk, or high or stoned solves your problems. It just lets you forget them for a little while.
It might take away your pain tonight, but what about tomorrow when you have to get in the pool for PE and there are cuts all over your arms? Or when you want to look nice for a special occasion and there are scars all over your arms and legs? Or when you can't wear short sleeves in the summer because people will stare at your arms, or your parents will find out. What happens when you're applying for a job, and every prospective employer can see written all over your body that you have a history of depression? Do you really think anyone wants to hire someone who they see as mentally unstable? Like it or not, society doesn't approve of cutting, so you either have to hide it or face social ostracization. Neither one is a very attractive option.
I'd be hypocritical if I told you to stop cutting, but believe me you don't want to go down the "it's ok to cut" road any more than you already have. I've been there and it's not really a very nice place.
The other problem with cutting is that band-aids are really f***ing expensive if you buy them often enough.

well i can see both sides of this....you say it's your body and you can do what you want to it...which in some cases is true...cutting is a very controversial thing...cutting is not normal and there is usually and underlying problem of some kind...cutting is a self mutilatilation....yes cutting may have the same effect as smoking...but smoking also isn't good for you...what do you believe in?? i don't want to offend you but you don't have a good argument when you say it's my body i can do what i want..well do you believe in abortion....because it's my body, so i can do what i want...or how about eating disorders?? i can have one of those because it's my body and i can do what i want...it's up to you to say whether you want help...i would suggest it but it's not my call...and the only way you can get help is seeing cutting as a problem...and the fact that you don't kinda worries me...people do care and that's why they say it's wrong and bad...i believe you when you say you're not suicidal...but it could accidently become that...you could be really mad or upset one day and cut just a little too deep...i don't know...if it's just like smoking...why not do that instead??

I may not believe attempting suicide is "bad" either, but I KNOW both are very unhealthy and signs that someone most definitely needs help and is unconsciously crying out for it. So, why not get constructive about it, take some responsibility that you do have a problem, and seek help from the professionals who can help you figure out why you want to do this thing? There are much more healthy and safer way to get that sense of control and calm you addictively seek. You've already taken a first step by posting this question... whether your realize it or not. Good luck.

You are open up areas of your body unnecessarily. When a surgeon opens your body they do so under the strictest and most sterile conditions and only when absolutely needed. They use proper equipment and they have assistance and are prepared in case something goes wrong. Do you have any medical training? What about infections? Flesh eating disease, staph infections, there's any number of microbes that don't need a very large wound to enter and proceed to destroy our body. Please don't use someone else's sins as a way to justify your own. They are hurting themselves but when you die, they will stand over your grave and tell each other what a fool you were. Life is short and it's full of misery. It'll find you. You don't have to go out looking for it or stand at your front door and invite it inside. I don't smoke, I don't take drugs, I've tried hard to be a good person, I have terminal cancer. Give yourself a break and enjoy life while you can.

You are in need of some DEEP Mental Health Help. I would say the reason why you don't see anything wrong with "cutting" is because you DO NOT feel you have such a "REAL" problem in the first place. How would you feel if you had a child, and they were busy "cutting" on them self? Truthfully? People who cut them self do it to take away the pain that really is hurting them. Is this you? It's easier for you to cut yourself than to face up to the real pain buried deep inside. Comparing it to smoking cig. smoking is off the wall. Tobacco is addicting, and has been proven by the Surgeon General to be a cause of cancer. Plus, if it's such an alright action for you, why did you bother to ask us for our opinion? I feel for you in more ways than one! Seek help, believe me-you won't regret it! Love yourself, your body, your more than worth it!!

Cutting is a sign of some pretty deep pain...emotional pain. Often, people who cut say they do it because it releases stress, or makes them "feel real". The bottom line is that it is dangerous, can escalate until you can't control it, and in the end may kill you. I 'm sure you think you can control it...but the fact that you're doing it at all tells me you are already having problems with control. Please, please, please seek some help. You can call a crisis line, tell a school counselor, a pastor, a parent, your family doctor; but tell someone. You need help to figure out why you feel the need to cut, why it makes you feel better. A side effect of cutting is a stigma that will follow you for as long as your scars are visible, even if you stop cutting. Please get help.

cutting IS a lot like smoking, THEY BOTH KILL U!! u need to get help. have u told ur parents about this? u should tell them too if u havent. it is very bad for u. I know this, because my friend was cutting herself and i kinda knew sumthin was wrong before she told me. when u go too far with it, it will 1st isolate u from ur friends and family, then after a while u could start drugs, cause the pain from the cutting isnt doing the job anymore. Do u want to ruin your life when ur still young? u need to think of the long term affects: u will also have scaring, u will be self-conscious all the time. if or when u want to marry, ur soon to be husband/boyfriend will probly not like u cause they know that ur addicted. Take it from me, u need to stop now.
Steps on how to STOP:
1. get rid of ALL razors, or anything that could be used for cutting yourself
2. Pray when u have the urge to cut
3. talk to ur friends, they will help u, when u have the urge to cut, call them up and talk to them, and get it off ur mind.
4. tell a professional they may know EXACTLY what ur going through, they may have done it too
some of the reasons why u may be cutting is becuase ur stressed, think ur not being listened to, feel left out...etc...
Please get help, and soon!! Goo Luck, and God Bless

There are easier and better ways for you to deal with your emotions that will not leave permanent scars. And, no, I cannot equate cutting yourself with smoking. Smokers are not doing violent harm to themselves -- it's a very passive form of destruction, kind of like eating a Big Mac every day. I would have to equate cutting with something like Anorexia, where the practitioner is into total annhiliation of self, only they don't realize it.

cutting yourself is not the best way to relieve your pain or anger. Why do you do this to yourself? Seek help if not from your parents or friends try this website. I hope it helps you. There are other ways instead of hurting yourself. Try counting to 10 or snapping something but don't do this to yourself.
Cutting is a serious and dangerous condition that should be taken seriously, and not ignored!

That is self mutilation. You should not want to damage or cause harm to yourself. You really need to do something about this. You will not be able to get rid of the scars. You will look at yourself later and wonder why did I do this to myself and you will feel even worse.
