A retired Admiral told us that the purpose of the military is to kill people and break their things ( not to be used as a playground for social engineers).

To support the national and international policy of the United States, and provide for the security and defense of the United States.

It's a lot more complicated than "to fight or win" wars.

Look up the "National Security Strategy" It is a periodically updated document. It can be found at whitehouse.gov, or google it.

And in response to White Chocolate, the military is under civilian control, which is those polticians.

"Is it to fight wars or too win wars?" Intresting destiction.

I'll get too that one in a bit.

The primary purpose of the US Military is too protect and defend US intrests abroad. It is the very edge of the broad sword known as "Foreign Policy".

Now... when that is examined under the light of the question you asked... Is it to fight or is it to win... I would have too say it's too fight. You don't have too win on the battle feild too claim a foreign policy victory.

Hope this helps.

What txmom said is why we do it, what bluff_michael said is how we do it, I would submit that the purpose is to destroy an enemies ability to wage war against us. Any other goals, like nation building, are political rather than military.

To protect the rights that are given to us as US citizens at birth. To protect this country from it's enemies- foreign and domestic. To do a job that 99% of the US population isn't willing to do. To use force when needed to help those that are weaker of mind and conviction...And to take the blame for every thing the liberals find offensive about our Government.

The purpose of the military is to serve the people of the United States. They stand ready to deploy, engange, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat. They are guardians of freedom and the American way of life.

It is to protect our country while giving insight to other more unfortunate countries. Our men and women in the military have given their pledge, as well as their lives, to make the United States of America a great country. I only wish our politicians had as much gumption and conviction as our soldiers do!

Our government claims that we are fighting offensive wars in the defense of our country. Iraq is a revolutionary war, no one will win. It is just instituting a revolution, which we are doing. It just sucks that it will probably turn in to civil war as soon as we pull out.

fight wars. there's always something to fight for, whether it is good or bad. would you want a military that won by slaughtering innocent people?

To defend the constitution of the United States of America and to defend and fight for USofA's interests...

To defend from Foreign and Domestic
To fight for the commander in chief as long as he obeys the constitution..

But I think a soldiers true duty is to the constitution...
