I had an epidural and it wasn't fun but I can tell you that when you are in the process of labor and already in extreme pain, it doesn't make much difference. But once it kicks in you won't feel much of anything so this is a lot better than natural with nothing at all. I had mine and shortly after it was done the doctor made an emergency decision to perform a c-section because my cervix was not dilating properly. But having the epidural was helpful because there was less pain involved. The delivery process is quite scary and unexpected and no matter how much you try to plan things ahead you won't know a thing until it actually takes place and every case is different. My advice would be to try and relax and not think about this too much because you'll know what is right for you when the time comes... Right now you should focus on getting as much rest as possible because after delivery you will be sleep deprived for several weeks. So take this time to pamper yourself and enjoy being pregnant.
By the way, one more thing... Your doctor will be leading the process so you should remember that the doc isn't going to let you suffer miserably. If they know that you are having extreme difficulty with the delivery then they have several ways to help move it along. They do this all the time and you should always communicate clearly about how you are feeling and what you need. Good luck!

Congratulations soon-to-be-mum! I think epidural is the best medical discovery ever! I too, like you, have low pain tolerance. I requested my doctor to give me epidural and I had the same worries and concerns as you have. But you know what, there is really no need to subject yourself to those horrific thoughts! The nurses and assistants will hold you (arms, legs, back) while you are in a "letter C" position so to make sure you wouldn't jerk or move once they prick your back with the needle. And it really didn't hurt that much...just like an ordinary regular injection. Anyway, when you are in the delivery room, you would just want to get it over with and not mind the pinch from that needle!
I highly recommend epidural! Pain-free childbirth! Woohoo!

I was scared to death of labor pain with my first child. I was more afraid of the epidural so I didn't get one. I was given Staydol and it took the edge off. With my second child I went into labor to fast I didn't have time for anything. You really do forget all about the pain after the baby is born. I had to get stitches with my first and I think it hurt the most. No epidural and I survived two births. Do what you want and good luck with whatever you choose.

Good for you. Knowing what you want is a good thing. Cant stand these mothers who brag about not having pain relief like it's a badge of honour or something- they must be crazy.
Yes, I had an epidural and it was great.
It feels like a tiny pinprick in your back (hurts less than having your blood taken) and then you can kind of feel it going in, but it doesn't hurt. Don't worry you won't move. Then it sort of spreads this numbing feeling all through your body. Hold your partners hand and talk with him as it goes in.
It is really nothing to worry about truly. You will still feel when it is time to push. I felt the sensation, but it didnt hurt a bit. Awesome. Birth was a really pleasant experience for me because of the epidural.
nb. Noone told me but sometimes the epidural can make you throw up. This happened to me when it was removed after my son was born. May not happen but be prepared.

I will not lie to you, I thought the procedure of the epidural was painful. It was hard to sit in the specific position during contractions. You should have an epidural based on your own decisions based on your beleifs and values.
I found that it was very beneficial for pain relief, very minimal for me. I had almost no feeling in my lower body and mostly intense pressure during the pushing stage. It does have its drawbacks, such as not being able to get out of bed and prolonged labor, etc.
To help you with your pain relief, you should be as prepared as possible for your labor. Learn about what to expect, take a tour of your hospital and maybe some birthing classes. Learn a type of relaxation that works for you and learn how to focus. Also, staying active (like walking) has been shown to help with ease of labor, along with good nutrition and water intake.
Good Luck to You:)

Don't worry, you won't feel it because they numb the area first with a numbing agent, and you are positioned such that you really cannot move, YOU DONT FEEL A THING!!! So dont worry, the experience is great, you feel no pain and you can ENJOY the birth of your child. Don't listen to the old tales of being paralyzed- they have been going around for 40 years!

I have four kids, I've done it with and without the epideral. I don't have a really high tolerance for pain or anything, but I definitely preferred it without the epideral, it was much, much faster. So, the pain is quick and I honestly don't even remember it. The epideral really slows things down...it takes forever...

my first child was 26 years ago , my last one was 19 months ago and believe me after four kids... take the epridural.every one of my kids were born with a diffrent method. the epo . isnt as bad as it sounds . i was scared to do it to , but it ended up being a god send ... but at first all the numbing went to one side of my body and the other didnt have any so i would suggest you roll to the other side a bit so the meds get all ur body. congrats on the baby . oh and the pain is nothing compared to what ive been threw on other births .
