ever since my friend told him to go out with me he's been really shy of me and I don't know how to get him to start talking to me again

Talk to him!! Ask questions about things he is interested in, and listen to the answers. If he is only shy, he will warm up to you.
If he talked to you before, without being shy, and now since your friend told him about you is shy/avoiding you, then the situation may be that he liked you as a friend and no more. Now that he knows you are interested in more, he may be put off.
One solution is to get with him and throw all the cards on the table...if he is only shy you will read that right away, if he is only interested in a good friend, then that will come out. Whatever you do, don't sit around wondering.

Keep in mind that some guys are not as aggressive as others. He may no know how to react knowing that you like him that way. Try things the other way around. Ask him out, there is nothing more flattering to a guy. If he says no, don't worry about it there are probably a hundred other guys that you don't even know about that would like to be with you.

U should try to talk to him. I know it sucks but Im in the same situation and I havent talked to her for a while and it sucks. Good luck I hope u have more guts then I do

just start talking to him and get him to open up a bit. after that try flirting a bit (not 2 much) if he flirts back thats a good sign. why dont you ask him out? guys luv a girl who makes the first move!!!! Good Luck!!!!
