its great that you are concerned with his wellbeing.
can you possibly give him to a friend or someone you know who you trust to care for him properly? i dont recommend the humane society because they often do put animals to sleep. sometimes veteranarians will help you find a good loving home for unwanted animals. Some of them have adoption programs. maybe you could check with some of them in your area and see if they can help.

Does he deserve a life in a shelter or home?
Does he deserve to be put to sleep?
Does he deserve to be abandoned and start a new life with strangers (if he is lucky enough to get a second chance at a home)?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you know the answer.
Its possible that you were hard to take care of as you were growing up and you did need several medications (if you are like the average person) and your parent(s) worked to provide for you so you didnt get a whole lot of play time but did you want to be given up or your parent(s) to back out on the comitment they made to you when they took you home? I dont think so! So, Toughen up for your own sake and give him the best life you possibly can, no one is perfect and I am sure your dog loves you imperfections and all!

If you really do not want the dog anymore, contact a beagle rescue operation in your home state. They rarely put dogs down. Those dogs that they do put to sleep are extreme cases.
I know you may get a lot of mean answers for this question, but at least you recognize that you may not be able to give him the care he deserves. My only advice would be to not give him up just to get something that you think is easier. Pets are a commitment like children, you take the good with the bad.

Why don't you see if you can find a friend or relative who might be interested in taking the poor critter. Also if they are not able to take the dog, then maybe they know someone who would want him. This way you know he is going to a good home. The other alternative is to make time for the dog in your life. You schedule time to work, time to go out to have fun, why not schedule a little time for this poor helpless creature. You say you love him, but also think that he probably loves you. Dogs are extremely loyal. There is no better home than with you if you truly love him because he thinks of you as his parent. Humane Societies have too many animals and in order to make sure they are able to continue their good work, they must either adopt the dogs or humanly euthanize them. Please make sure you have exhausted all other avenues before you take this route.

I used to raise beagles before I started raising kids. They are wonderful, loving, smart dogs - but they CAN be a handful. You are not a bad person for being honest about the fact that caring for this dog is no longer within your reach. It's far better to be honest, and your desire for him to have the best life possible is admirable.
When I realized I could no longer care for my beagles, I called a beagle rescue organization (I live in Florida, and the nearest one was in Bradenton; there are chapters in every state, look it up online). They put me in touch with families (not breeders) who understood the challenges of this breed, and I was able to adopt my dogs out to loving homes, with a lot of tears, but knowing I was doing the right thing for the dogs. The families were wonderful and even stayed in touch with me from time to time, sending photos and letting me know the dogs were doing great. I was very relieved, to say the least.
I wouldn't give my dog to the Humane Society, only because they are already so overloaded with animals, and you have other options.
Try not to feel too guilty about this situation. Things change, circumstances change, that is life. The most important thing is that you find a loving home for your dog, and you will be able to sleep better at night knowing that he is getting the attention he deserves. Best of luck to you, sweetie - and your dog.

If you don't have the time for your dog, I would say it's in his best interest to seek out a home that will. My thought is that the humane society may have a hard time placing a dog with issues and constant medical needs.
I would suggest seeing if there is a Beagle rescue in your area, as they would be more likely to place him in a good home.
I also have to say thanx to you for thinking of your dogs needs, rather than being selfish about it like so many people are.

I volunteer for my local SPCA and I have been there for 10 mos. The turn over rate of dogs being adopted is so much higher than it is for them to be put to sleep. My local SPCA has an intense screening process to ensure that the adopter is suitable to care for an animal. I would check into the local shelters in your area. I would call them and ask what their screening process entails. Another thing to consider is if you live in a larger city, the shelter may not be to house the dog for that long of a time before a decision is made on his fate. A smaller town would possibly be able to house your dog for a longer period of time. If you are still undecided on what to do about the SPCA, try putting an ad in your local paper or taking an add into the vet's offices in your neighborhood and putting it on their bulletin board. When people call you to get information on him, you can screen them and make a judgement on whether it would be a good home for him. Good luck!!!

Find a local beagle rescue. They will do a home visit and make sure dog and owner are a good match. Also they will do random visits to make sure he is being taken care of. As you said, Beagles can be a handful and are not for everyone. A rescue will know the exact criteria for finding him the right home.

If you already have him on meds for his condition and it isn't improving then call the vet and ask him how long it takes for the stuff to work. If you are just bored with the animal.....get over it....become a better pet owner. Yes , you are right about giving him up to a shelter....He has special needs therefore not too encouraging for him to be adopted. You might try the classifieds and advertise him as a special pup.....needs room to play etc. I really wish I could help...How about a beagle rescue group?

I think you should keep him and give him lots of love. You may not have a lot of time to play with him ALL the time but just play with him when you can. Just keep giving him his meds and do the best you can and he will know you love him. You said you love dogs and I'm sure he knows you love him as long as his needs are met and he gets cuddled with when you're home. We have a 5 month old puppy and he sleeps with us at night and he's quite happy even though we don't take him for walks and play fetch everyday.
