Niacin's chemical name is nicotinic acid. Pellagra is the disease that is caused by a serious deficiency of nicotinic acid (niacin). Some of the potential neuro bioldeliriumogical symptoms are memory impairment, depression, mania, sometimes paranoia. Bad deficiency cases some of the following symptoms, sometimes exhibit cogwheel rigidity of the extremities, clouding of consciousness, uncontrollable gasping and sucking reflexes. Some symptoms of earlier cases of deficieincy are burning of the mouth, pharynx, esopha, abdominal, discomfort and distention. Later nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
. The earliest symptoms are mouth tongue and mucous membrane turning scarlet red, and soon the area becomes sore, with excessive salivation, tongue enlargement, followed by mouth ulcers.
I suspect that those symptoms would affect a person's athletic performance.
B vitamin supplementation especially niacin will correct the problem.

Niacin is a needed coenzyme in metabolic reactions, which includes respiration. Remembering that respiration produces ATP, that's straight forward to be sure that the athlete might have much less potential to do his athletic activity.
