If the surgery is worth it? Depends on your pain tolerance...not to mention infection. However, I just got 2 ingrown toenails removed, along with cutting off a oice of skin my doctro put something to on my toenali root to kill a small portion of my toenail (the portion that kept getting ingrown). It has been three years and I have yet to get another one. I wear boots and climbing shoes all the time and have yet to have another toenail become ingrown.
I would get the surgery and ask about stopping the root from coming back, some way to kill that bad part.

Have you had several opinions? You have to grow your nails to a certain length and keep them in that shape to prevent in growth. However, if there is already infection or too much skin puncture from the nail, cutting into your flesh, there really isn't any option. Go check. If you are a female, go to a reputable nail saloon, ask around, you will also find help from people who take care of nails on a daily basis.
Furthermore, if the 400 dollars includes surgery and care, it might be just right. You will need a blood test, local anesthetics, the surgery, after care, ointment and oral medication. Doesn't that sound reasonable?

when i was younger i would always get an ingrown toenails. Eventually I had the surgery where they cut the side of my nail off. Its been around 10 years now and I havent had one since.
In your details your doctor stated that he would cut the nail horizontal. I dont think that will do any good considering anyone could cut your toenail horizontally with a toenail clipper.

whether it is worth it or not would be totally up to you! Only you know what you value your toe at. Lets see, do you like having that toe,foot,leg,etc...?
Wait- did you say you already had one surgery? For the ingrown toenail? If so- I don't understand how you could have another one. You might consider changing to a Doctor that can and will educate you on how to keep this from happening a third time. ? Just my opinion. Good Luck!!

I think if it is going to help you feel better and if this is a on-going problem then definetely you should have it done because in the long run it will pay off..
