My female cat likes her belly rubbed, but I used to have a male cat and when I rubbed his belly he would bite me. I thought it was just him, but other people told me the same thing about their male cats too. Why do they hate it so much?

I don't think it is gender related. Their belly is a very vulnerable area and a lot of cats do not appreciate being rubbed here as it makes them feel threatened. I know of some cats that adore a belly rub and others that despise it.

Your cat is not in the majority. Most cats, regardless of sex, don't particularly like having their bellies rubbed or touched because it is the most vulnerable spot on their body.

My male LOVES belly rubs. But he's the first cat I've ever personally seen that does.

It's not a male cat thing at all. Some cats, male or female, doesn't like to have their bellies rubbed because it's a vulnerable spot for them. I used to have a female cat (before we had to put her down) and she hated it. We got a new male kitten and he doesn't mind at all.

A cat will only let you rub its belly once it trusts you. I have 2 male cats and a female and they all let me rub their bellies. The males actually like it more than the female.

If your cat had gotten surgery or gotten fixed before, that might be why. They might have horrific memories of when it got any kind of surgery. It might also be that your cat doesn't trust you. After many different memories one of them has scared he\she for life. My cat hates belly rubs. He loved them as a kitten, but now he is full grown and he absolutely hates it. I remember he got fixed as a kitten and after that he hates belly rubs. He will attack me, bite me, or scratch me.
Remember if this was any what useful like my post.

I have two male cats and have not experienced this, in fact they like backrubs, belly rubs, ear rubs and one of my cats even loves a little foot massage every now and then.

my male cat will only let me rub his belly, if my husband tries, he'll latch onto his arm and kick and try to chew it off. But I know what your talking about, cuz my aunts male cat wouldnt let you anywhere near his belly. I think it might be a dominance issue. When my hubby and my cat are playing, my cat will sit on top of his hand.

i don't know if this is true or not but i was told once that it takes a trust between you and your cat before they will let you touch there belly because that is the easiest place to rip open on a cat and when they fight that is what they go for...
