Air gets sucked through the intake which then goes to the cylinders, because for the spark to ignite the fuel you need oxygen(O2). Carbon dioxide(CO2) is most of what makes up the exhaust gases which occur as a result of the combustion of the fuel.

I don't know if that's the answer you were looking for... But that's what I got out of it.

in gas motors the gas is ignited by the spark plug i think once ignited it is then fire fire must have 3 things to burn succecfully. material(wood,gas,cloth),oxygen,and a spark. so the co2 would probably be to keep the fire burning and to keep it from suffocating.
