Dom is expensive largely do to its brand marketing. Same reason why Gucci bags are so expensive. People like being seen drinking it. Is is good? yes. Is it the best? no way. Many champagnes at the same price point are much, much better made.

And Dom Perignon did not invent champagne. sorry, folks.

Because it is considered some of the best champagne in the world. Dom Perignon is considered the originator of champagne. Dom Perigonon is from the Champagne region of France. Wine of this style from other regions of the world has to be called sparkling wine. Indeed, Dom Perignon is expensive. But does its taste hold up against some of the less expensive sparkling wines from California? In a blind tasting (all the bottle were covered) I found I like Echo sparkling much better than Dom Perignon; which made me really happy because Echo sparkling wine can be purchased under $20.

You think Dom is expensive? Then what of Cristal? They are not bad.... OK, they are pretty good in fact. But is it worth it?

Dom is in the same line like Rolex, Rolls Royce, LV, Chateau Lafite, Bali...etc,etc. It's instant brand recognition and implies confidence and superior quality.

Why so expensive? Because people are willing and continue to pay what was printed on the price tag.

Good question! I had it once, but I've tasted better - wasn't it invented by a priest in France named Dom Perignon?

It's expensive for several reasons. First, the grapes that are used or the very finest french chardonnay grapes. Second, the aging process for storing and caring for the sparkler are long and tedious which takes years for it to be ready for consumption. The bottles are turned by hand in the wine cellar to control the fermentation and sediment.Third, only so much is produced so supply and demand is a factor.

Good question... Could it be that its grapes are pretty difficult to cultivate, or the big procedure needed to make it? Or maybe everyone's just so willing to shell out a lot of $$$ for it, that they can charge whatever they want.....!!

Reputation-it has been the toast of the elite so long, everyone presumes it to be superior. There are many better but none with a more secure foothold in the elitist market.

Other than the very intensive use of "methode champenois" and no big factory production, it's all supply and demand. If people are willing to pay it, they'll charge it.
