One from column B, one from column A.
As children, our views on religion, and virtually everything else, are the views of those around us, most often our family. We've not yet had the time to learn what we need in order to formulate independent opinions.
When we begin to reach adulthood, we develop the capacity to view things objectively and form opinions based on our own unique experience, including those dealing with more profound matters such as religion and morality.
Which isn't to say by virtue of reaching a certain age, one uses this capacity, or even accepts it as an individual right.
But the ability is in place, where it wasn't in childhood, and whether one chooses to embrace it or not is up to the individual.
Incidentally, choosing NOT to choose is a choice, as well.
To myself the subject of religion is just that, a subject; one of the many spheres of knowledge to which people devote their energy and intellect. I place no greater value or priority on it than I do on any other. I'm as saddened that so much grief and division has taken place in its name, as I am pleased that so many have found comfort and salvation within its traditions.

I was raised as the kid with the brussel sprouts. When I got older I explored a lot of others. Now I'm an agnostic, because none of them could answer my questions to my satisfaction, and I don't want to hear that if I question what they tell me I'm not a good person. I know I am.
