Originally, the dreadlocks were a form of religious symbol that the rastafarians use to show strength (Samson from the bible). Athough it still is a religous symbol, the style of wearing dreadlocks has become a fad, especially in Jamaica and some other countries.

Let me emphasise that within some Rastafarian cultures, they may or may not wash their hair. If it is washed, then only NATURAL ingredients are used i.e. nothing chemically made (soap). Other people who just sport the hairstyle do in fact wash their hair. It's the only way to keep the dreads looking neat and tidy.

There are different styles or ways to aquire dreadlocks.
1. The natural way(and the messiest) is to just let the hair grow and knot up

2. The OTHER natural way is to segment the hair into different small portions and to plait/twist the hair continuosly, that way, you can properly maintain the hair everytime you pull out the hair, you can re-plait it to make it grow.

3. Sister Locks. This is another type of dread where the hair is contunuously knotted at the root of the hair and continues to be knotted as the hair grows. This is the preferred method for some people.

4. Weave Locks(Fake dreadlocks) This one is simply woven and attached to the root of the hair. This method is well maintained as the locks can be changed once they get old.

I'm not sure if I am forgetting anything, but again let me reiterate: NOT ALL PEOPLE WHO HAVE DREADLOCKS ARE RASTAFARIANS and MOST DO WASH THEIR HAIR!

Remember, there are other nasty people who dont have dreadlocks and don't wash their hair either!

first let's clear up some misconceptions, once you dread your hair you cannot wash for a least 6 weeks or at least 2 mos after that you hair can be washed and treated. To answer your question you will need some beewax to roll and twist the dreads.
and Most people that I know with dreads hair does not smell. the shampoo and beeswax all have a nice smell to it. the reason for not washing is to get it time to loc up..washing will cause it not to loc.

I would just backcomb and roll. Wax attracts lint and dirt.

I recommend you talk to a Rastafarian. I believe it has religious connotations and I recall seeing Deadheads into this look. It involves not washing your hair for a long long time.
