you do not have to file a tax return if this was your only income. for 2005, a single person had to file a tax return only if they were making in excess of $8,200. its probably a little higher for 2006.

Unless you're someone else's dependent, or are working as an independent contractor (if you got a 1099, not a W-2; will have had no social security taken out), you don't have to file if you're single. Depending on your age though, you might want to file to get the Earned Income Credit. To be eligible for that you must be at least 25 unless you have a qualifying child.

You must file a tax return if you have earned income, even if you ultimately owe no tax on it. Failure to do so is just asking for trouble. If the money you earned came in the form of a paycheck, the issuer of that paycheck has already furnished the IRS with a record of your earnings in the form of their business tax return (listing your wages as a "cost" to their business), and with all the automated auditing that is done now, eventually they will catch up with you.

Even if you owe nothing, failure to file is an offense you don't want to be found guilty of...
