By definition -Pollute-(transitive verb) 1. contaminate, to cause harm to an area of the natural environment, for example, the air, soil, or water, usually by introducing damaging substances such as chemicals or waste products.

Why this matters is really the point. Although modern living appears to isolate us from the Earth & Environment, we are inseperably attatched. From the Air we breath, the Water we drink, and the food we eat, all are from the environment. Many times in the past, pollution has caused Air, Food, & Water to become dangerous to breath, eat, or drink. Some big cities around the world like Mexico City & Shanghai have to alert their citizens when pollution in the air is too dangerous to go outside. Recently the United States had to warn it's people about tainted spinach because of pollution in the crop fields. All over the world fresh water supplies are threatend by pollution which makes the water un drinkable. Coral Reefs around the world are in danger due to pollution in the ocean which threatens the supply of seafood. If action is taken to stop pollution, We can fix this. It is your job to learn about the things you can do to prevent pollution and to teach other people what you've learned, because pollution is bad.

Pollution is really a matter of perspective. One organism's lethal waste product is another's livelihood. An example. The earth's atmosphere wasn't always as rich in Oxygen. It used to have so little oxygen in it that you or I couldn't have survived here. But the waste product of 'reducing' bacteria (Oxygen) polluted their environment so much that we've taken over. It could be argued that by polluting our environment we (the Oxygen breathing human population) are simply setting the pendulum going in the other direction.
