There was an some research done on this about 20 years ago. they found that there was a chemical missing in the brain of people with addictive personalities Strangely they said that diabetics are also missing that chemical. So, if this information is still considered true, it is clear that the propensity for addiction is inherited, but the substance or action to which you become addicted can be different.

Ty had a good answer but the will of a person is not strong enough to overcome addiction without professional help. The type of addiction dictates the type of help you need. Some addictions are harder to overcome due to enviroment. Some learned habits, which are psychological addictions such as nail biting, need behavior modification therapy. But physical addictions such as drug/alcohol use require a much more intense treatment along with behavior modifications.

it's likely that you can inherit addiction from your parents. new studies have found that the genes play a huge role in your ability to become addictive. Family DNA plays part in vulnerability to addiction but the will of an individual can overcome that vulnerability.

We are born with certain "Predispositions" If your family members have been an addict to drugs or alcohol, there is a chance that you may "predisposed" to that addiction.

That is one of the reasons why Physicians are so concerned by Family Medical History.

Some of us are Born with an "Addictive Personality". The fact that you are asking the question is a good sign. Be cautious of the use of cigarettes, alcohol and any drugs.

The use of any of these substances is additive.

Good Luck. Chow

Yes, you can inherit the predisposition to become an addict and it's a probability that you learned the behaviors of an addict as you grew up - if it was a close relative.
