Well some diseases are inhereited like depression. A lot of people do not know that so...yes depression can make one abuse substances. Drinking for example to me is not genetic. YOu choose to do things or not to do things. You are your enviornment and if that is all you see then that is all you may do. It is up to that person to break the cycle and want to stop.

Yes. In open adoptions in Scandanavia, a number of sets of twins were adopted into different families. Those who had biological parents who were alcoholic were more likely to be alcoholic and vice versa. The major factory was genetic and not environmental. Also, at least with alcholol, people who are predisposed to addiction to it metabolize alchohol differently. On top of that, if there are addicts of any kind swinging from your family tree, you have "inherited" dysfunctional behaviors because the entire family suffers when addiction is present.

Sure. Some folks are more suseptible (sp?) to some substances. My family has a problem with alcohol, I never touch it.

Asians lack the gene that helps them process alcohol, so they get drunk quicker. The common term for this is "asian blush." And since native americans are asians by ancestry, they have the problem, too.

to my knowledge they haven't found a direct link yet, but there is that possibility, what also is important is that someone growing up in a home with an addict is more likely to become addicted. since the drug/alcohol is more available, and physical/emotional abuse.
