The knot on the side of the noose usually leads to the breaking of the neck when the body drops. Any life left after this severe trauma is snuffed out by subsequent suffocation.

A couple different things could happen. If you're being hung from a height where you could just drop, your neck could be snapped and you die immediately. If you are hanging rather than dropping, you are slowly being suffocated, deprived of oxygen. A paralysis will set in eventually because the organs can't function without oxygen; you die of suffocation without ability to move.

Depends on how it's done.
Choking to death is probably how most suicides die from hanging, or there's the drop method which, if carried out properly, will break your neck (the hangman's job was actually quite skilled, if they didn't get the drop right, depending on the persons body weight, there was a chance of ripping the head right off - or leaving them dangling & choking to death)

If done properly, the neck breaks and the windpipe is collapsed. Death is nearly instantaneous. In government sanctioned hangings, they weigh and measure the condemned to make sure the rope is tied exactly right and is exactly long enough to work properly and that death is quick. If it is not done properly, death by suffocation could happen, which takes a long time to occur...usually several minutes. In most civilized society, THAT kind of hanging would be considered cruel and unusual punishment.

Rephrase the question otherwise no living preson would be able to answer. Say, "How do someone die when he/she is hanged?". If you say, "How do you die when hanged?" How the hell are we suppose to know, how did or will I die when hanged.

If the bottom drops out fast enough, it snaps your neck. If not, you slowly strangle. Ever watch old westerns?

Suffocation...your air supply is cut off. Also, probably a broken neck.

If you are lucky, your neck snaps...if you aren't lucky, you asphyxiate...this can take a little while.
It's a very very disturbingly ugly way to die.

Neck breaks? Or suffocation? I don't know for sure.
