Basically it is because of how religion *works*. A religion gives people a foundation of knowledge and beliefs and then requires strict adherence to that foundation despite any new information that may come along. This is especially so when it faces conflicting information. In fact religion has turned this strict adherence in spite of overwhelming evidence into a virtue - they call it faith. (If you look up the definition of faith, you will see that it says, "firm belief in something for which there is no proof".) Originally it was a way for a religion to keep some control over its members.

Now compare that to how science works. The scientific method also provides a foundation of knowledge, however, and more importantly, it *also* gives you a method by which you can assimilate new and conflicting information into your body of knowledge in a logical way. So when something arises that doesn't seem to fit in with the current view of things, it gives you a way to test it, and then resolve the problem. (Religion would have you either deny the conflict exists, or attribute it to god.)
I think its pretty clear which system works better at revealing how the Universe really works. Don't believe me? Which system led us to realize that the world is round, not flat, that we revolve around the sun, not the other way around, etc, etc...

So religions people quote the bible, quran, etc. because that is how their religion *teaches* them to respond. To do anything else would be, well, unfaithful.

Hope that helps some...

P.S. Nice explanation of how atheists think efw...keep it up.

If the religion is based on the book being the unquestioned word of God, as the Bible or Qur'an, then it is necessary, on the part of the faith full, to accept that, since to question the book would be to question the faith, and by extension, to question God. It's a lot easier to keep a closed mind than an open one, hence: "God said it, I believe it, that settles it!" If you never stop questioning you have no absolute certainty, and this is what many people look for in religion. They wouldn't need a Shepherd if they weren't sheep.

Here are some facts to consider:

Fact: the human race has been around for hundreds of thousands of years.

Fact: the concepts of an afterlife, of gods, spirits, etc. have only been around for a few millenia.

Fact: these concepts were invented and promulgated by ignorant barbarians as an attempt to explain the world around them, before there was a such thing as science or epistemology.

Fact: most of the books of the bible were written by people who were never there, as second- or third-hand accounts decades or even centuries after the events they claim to tell about.

Fact: the books of the bible have been heavily edited over the centuries, with passages or even whole books being re-written or omitted to fit the theological and political climates of the time.

Fact: the books of the bible have also been subject to extensive errors, misinterpretations, and differences of opinion in interpretation as they are translated from one language to another and from that to yet another language.

Knowing all this, how can religion be viewed as anything BUT the invention of men?

I know this may not be what Christians want to hear, and I doubt I'll do much harm their faith; faith is remarkably impervious to reason. But we atheists are nothing like what the church leaders are fond of charicaturing us as. We are freethinking individuals who are able to see the Big Picture without the blinders of religion.

We do not live in despair, quite the contrary; freethought is incredibly refreshing, liberating, and empowering. We are not nihilists, but lovers of life who see it as all the more precious because there's no eternal afterlife. We do not need the bribe of heaven or the threat of hell to be good people, we believe in being good for its own sake. Through science and reason, we know more about the true nature of the world we live in than your religion could ever hope to offer.

Why do psycho-babblists believe the drivel Sigmund wrote and is now touted as absolute?

Look, faith and the Living word are part of a whole. The teachings of scripture have allot of good in them..which is mostly historical stuff that lets us see through someone else what we shouldn't do..
It is and always has been INDIVIDUALS who take and distort the teaching that give it the modern bad rep that is shrieked Today.
Scripture is judgmental..it's suppose to be!!! we are barely evolved pond scum, and we think we know everything...

I personally believe that God had allot more planned for us, and we and a certain Angel of light screwed it all up.

I'm a Christian, and I don't believe The Little Mermaid really happened, and that was written in a book. O.K. That settles that.

I do believe it happened if it was retained as a book which was eventually included in what we know as the Bible, because God wouldn't mislead humanity with lies or misinformation.

We are talking about God here. He owes us NOTHING. He has provided a way for us to be fulfilled and happy, in spite of who we are and what we have done.

Why would I NOT believe what His Bible says.

I will not quote the bible, however if you want the answer to your question do a web search on these three things. Prophecy and the bible, pay special attention to the dates it was prophesied and the date it was fulfilled, the bible and archeology, the bible and history.....you should find the answers there if you are really wanting to know.

Well I'm a Christian and I believe what the Bible says. It's mostly about having faith and believing what the Bible says. If your not saved and a born again Christian you most likely won't really understand why Christians belive everything in the Bible.
