Dad's birthday is in two weeks. He generally likes anything to do with the bible and since he's a veteran, he likes war books or battle music kind of things. I'm pretty far away from the christian scene but would like suggestions for something he'd like. Thanks

There is a DVD called "The League of Grateful Sons" It can be found on this web site: Christianbook.com

It is about:
the godly legacy of the fathers of World War II. Returning to Iwo Jima for the 60th anniversary of that epic battle, tough-as-nails Marine Bill Henderson and P-51 Mustang flyboy Bill Brown share the providences of God and the lessons they learned with their sons and daughters. Includes archival footage and wartime letters. Filmed on location. 75 minutes.

Hope this helps.
I think is awesome that you care about your Dad's beliefs. You are very thoughtful.

If he's a lover of history how about some books on the Inquisition and The Crusades, then perhaps he can see some of the torment the Christian faith has brought mankind. Perhaps you could also buy some books involving the many times the Church has been more than happy to murder fellow human beings when scientific research has gotten in the way of religious dogma. This would be best exemplified by the execution of one of their own,the torture and execution of Father Giordano Bruno in 1600, so I would suggest a book on that man myself. Perhaps these would lead him closer to the sanity offered away from the church.

uh, get him a war book? Or a CD of battle music? WHat does you being an athiest have to do with anything? My dad likes to mow the lawn and I don't but that doesn't mean I can't think of a birthday gift for him...

Tell him that birthday celebration is unchristian and give him nothing.

“The notion of a birthday festival was far from the ideas of the Christians of this period.” (The History of the Christian Religion and Church, During the Three First Centuries, translated by H. J. Rose, 1848, p. 190) “Origen [a writer of the third century C.E.] . . . insists that ‘of all the holy people in the Scriptures, no one is recorded to have kept a feast or held a great banquet on his birthday. It is only sinners (like Pharaoh and Herod) who make great rejoicings over the day on which they were born into this world below.’”—The Catholic Encyclopedia, 1913, Vol. X, p. 709.

Clearly, then, the festive celebration of birthdays does not find its origin in either the Hebrew or the Greek Scriptures. Additionally, M’Clintock and Strong’s Cyclopaedia (1882, Vol. I, p. 817) says the Jews “regarded birthday celebrations as parts of idolatrous worship . . . , and this probably on account of the idolatrous rites with which they were observed in honor of those who were regarded as the patron gods of the day on which the party was born.”

Why dont you get him a war book or battle music, you seem to know what he likes. And that is what really matters.

Well that is something to think about. If you already know what he likes, why not just give him a gift certificate to someplace nice. Perhaps maybe you could take him to dinner. Take him out golfing or if he likes another sport consider getting tickets for that.

I'm sure she already has a bible, so I would suggest some small, tasteful cross earrings. Be sure the color matches her necklace. Also check to see if she has pierced ears so you get the right kind. Blessings on your Journey!

If he likes war books, I suggest 1776 - it's a very fast read about the American revolution, and if he's a right-wing neo-con, it may be good way to remind him about the founding ideals.

I suggest you go to a Christian store - they have many ideas. You will definitely find something there he will like.

I am glad to see someone on this site that is respectful of the differences we all have...
I suggest a gift card to a Christian book store in his area. They have a little bit of everything and he could take a day to himself to spend it.
