depends on how well trained. My dog was a k-9 officer, so I grew up with a sniffer all my life, and she was good. I would say she could indicate pot from at least 60 feet away.

"more than a hundred yards but the handler has to give him the word or he wont even be looking for drugs. what i mean is if you walk by a police dog they wont hit on you if you have weed on you the handler has to put the dog in this mode .some have a word they use . some just pull out a ball and the know what to do"
That is entirely false. You walk past a k9 that's trained to sniff drugs, and he'll hit. Some dogs are passive, meaning they'll sit beside their handler, or give them some other cue as to the hit. Other dogs are aggressive, meaning they'll dig at the drugs, or bark, possibly bite - something more assertive; but they'll hit as well.
As for how far away. There are alot of factors. Amount, how long you've had it on you (or in the car, etc), temperature, humidity, etc. In ideal situations, it's going to be meausred in dozens of feet at least.

According to a friend of mine who works in airport security, they have a beagle that can tell if there is marijuana around from nearly 200 feet away. At that distance, he cannot pinpoint it, but as he gets closer he can. At the airport they have him walk around suitcases and as soon as he smells the marijuana, he sits down next to the suitcase. One time I wanted to test one of those dogs. I was flying home from the Netherlands. I put one small piece of pot in the cuff of my pants. It was smaller than a grain of rice. At Newark airport in NJ, one of the dogs was walking around. He sniffed my pants and sat down. I was stupid because they took me aside and asked me to step into another room. The searched me and found nothing. Then they brought the dog back in and he sat down by by right leg. One of the inspectors looked into my cuffs and saw nothing. Then they told me the dog was always right. I told them I had no problem taking a blood test or urinalysis. They laughed and asked me where I was coming in from. When I told them Holland, they asked me if I had been walking in the city before I went to the airport and I told them yes. They felt I must have accidentally brushed up against some pot and the dog smelled it on me. Then they let me go.
