I think you're going to have problems travelling by train as the 31st is a Sunday. The first train out of Stoke appears to leave at 09.23 and gets in at 14.11.

You won't get there by rail for 13.00 as it is a Sunday.

There is a National Express coach to London Victoria departing Hanley Bus Station at 08.15 which arrives in London Victoria at 11.30. If you book online at www.nationalexpress.com you can get a single ticket for £6.

The quickest way to Gatwick is then a train from London Victoria which departs at 11.45 arriving in Gatwick at 12.20. Single ticket for that journey is £14.00

The cheapest train tickets are the APEX tickets you buy in advance. Speak to National Rail Enquiries http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ or your local train station.
