I'll be getting done with school for my A&P soon. I need a general list of tools. I have the super basics, but what exactly should I have by the time I get into the field?

Don't worry about getting all the tools before entering the field. It depends on what you will be working on as to what tools you will need. As a new A & P you will spend a lot of time scraping PRC, grinding corrosion, and popping panels off and on.

A speed handle, ratcheting box end wrenches, and an electric or air powered screw gun are good additions.

Most guys are prettly easy with lending tools to new mechs, especially since you will be paired up with one for any significant job to start with. Just keep track of what tools you borrow the most and which are the most useful, that way you don't spend too much on tools you don't need.

Also, Snap-on makes the best sockets, ratchets, and screwdrivers, anything else buy Craftsman or SK because they are as good or better and much cheaper. Try and buy a tool each paycheque and soon you'll be well equipped.

I work contract so all my tools fit in a bush-box, lean and mean, not much more than the basics. I find that the amount of tools a mechanic has is inversely proportional to the amount of time he spends using them.

I've been an A&P since 1975...Make sure your tool box has wheels. you'll be moving a lot. Maybe just out to the line or ramp, maybe across the country/world.
