Still repairing my mom's house that was destroyed in Hurricane Rita. It was gutted and now we are ready for the walls and floors but no one can agree what goes first the plywood on the floor or the Luan on the walls!

3/4" plywood floor goes first

No plywood directly beneath the tile. You should have a subfloor of plywood or OSB or concrete something else on the bare floor now. If you have a concrete floor, that is all you need. If your floor is built with joists and some type of wood subfloor, then you will want to put down a layer of durock backer board or a cement based sheet made for going under tile. The same with the walls, though you should not need anything behind the backer board. Each manufacturer has recommended methods for installing their product. Plywood will get wet (all tile leaks eventually) and can grow mold, rot, swell, etc. Good luck and have fun.
