Set the compass arc length to over half of the line length. Scribe and arc from each end of the line. Draw a line between where the arc's cross that will not only be the middle of the line but the bisecting line will be perpendicular to the line.

Take your compass, make the distance between the point and the pencil shorter than the line. Put the compass on one end of the line. Draw with your compss. Then put the compass on the other end of the line without changing the distance between the point and the pencil. Do the same thing on that die. The two arcs will intersect halfway through the line.

I believe you mean bisect a "line segment". Open your compass so it's more than half of the width of the segment. put the point on the end, make an arc. repeat at the opposite end, leaving the compass at the same opening. now make a line through the intersections of the 2 arcs

Put point of compass on one end of line and pencil on the other.
Scribe a circle around this point.
Do the same from the other end of the line.
The two circles will intercept at two points.
Join these intersections with a straight line.
Where this line crosses the first line is the exact middle of both lines.
