Talk to your counselor at school.

If your parents wont take you seriously, talk to another trusted adult in your life, teacher, counselor, friends parents, anyone. You need to get this checked out because of your strong family history. Your mom may be down playing your symptoms as a form of denial. You have every reason to be concerned, and I applaud you for realizing this is a serious issue. One other thing. If you are bipolar, make sure that your Dr puts you on a mood stabilizer along with an anti depressant. Without the mood stabilizer, the anti depressant could make you send you into a terrible mania where you would be unable to sleep, concentrate on school work, focus on things, etc. Good Luck. I wish you well.

I know exactly how you feel. SERIOUSLY. I'm only 15, and depression and bi-polar run in my ffamily also. I won't discriminate, I promise. First of all, I don't wanna dis your mom, but if she has it herself, and the history runs in the family, she shouldn't be doubting you. Mood swings and hormones DO affect the depression, but they don't cause it. I get grief all the time, people saying "Well how much stress could a 15 year old possible have?" It's alot worse than they think. Depression is a disease people. You can't fix it on your own. You need medicine to help it. Really the only idea I have for you is to try talking to your school counselor. Explain it to them. And don't leave anything out. They can talk to your parents, and explain to them what's going on. I feel bad for you, because my mom did notice my troubles and she took me to get help, when I was nine or so. It might have helped that I kept having mental break downs at school but still. Good luck to you hun, and If you need a friend let me know, I'd love to help :]

Bipolar affective disorder and depression exists in children also, but you need to talk to your family doctor.
I think you may be able to discuss depression with your guidance counselor at school and they can offer suggestions only.

Your hormones are changing...that's true and that's where your family doctor can help with discussions about that and mostly about your sleep habits.
If you want your life back under control, you need to sleep 8 or 9 hours every night including the weekends...otherwise burnout and it has many forms will get to you, and then you won't like it when doctors give you a label!
Please listen to your mom, but talk to professionals!

She is also correct that because others have conditions, you may have a tendency but not really have the disease if you learn to take care of yourself, and that's now and forever...don't forget good nutrition and cut back on sugar and white bread...more sugar fixes......everyone is different...Thank GOD!

You are right to be concerned as bipolar disorder does indeed run in families.

Personally, I'm nervous about diagnosis in children, as I think it can be incredibly hard to diagnose accurately, and certainly at your age you will be at the mercy of your hormones which will complicate matters.

My advice: try and stick with it, for the time being at least. The drugs used to treat bipolar disorder are not to be taken lightly - the side effects can be very nasty. You should see your doctor and explain your concerns. Someone needs to take this seriously and keep an eye on you for the next few years. i can understand your concern talk to a psychiatrist about your concerns and tell him your family history quite often doctors used to say that mental illness will often skip a generation sometimes people with a bipolar illness, who are not on medication, get "stuck" in their mood. they either get severely depressed and cant get out of it, or they get really high and cant get out of it. because you have a family history of mental illness, i suggest you have it checked some people who are high or euphoric do not realize they are sick, because you show insight, there is a chance you might not be, however now is a good time to check it out by a professional.

Tell your doctor your family history and tell him/her and your story the exact same thing you printed above. Then tell them that you want to be monitored for it or them to watch out for it. Sometimes it does take patience for a proper diagnoses. When you get older, it will be a lot more obvious, but not always. I have one doctor who says I definately am and another who says I am not. I take the medication anyways and feel better, but it makes me wonder.
