I need a strapless dress taken in 1 size and the hem shortened. There is some embroidery on the top, so not sure how that part will work to take in. (If it makes any difference cost-wise, I live in the San Francisco Bay area.) I'm debating whether to buy an $80 dress that needs to be taken in one size and hemmed, or go with a $299 dress off the rack that only needs a hem. I like both dresses pretty equally.

I have my dress taken in a size on top, hemmed, and a bustle added. It cost about $200, although it was not pressed.

I would call around and check with local tailors to see how much it would cost.

Taking the dress in one inch is the same as taking it in one dress size. How much they're taking it in doesn't matter. The $299 dress will probably need something taken in on the sides, since most do for that snug fit that it needs to have.

For the sides, it will probably be around $50. The hem will probably be $75. This is just a ballpark. I'd go with the $80 dress, though. Its unlikely that the cost of alterations on that one will total as much as the $299 dress, even if it only needs a hem.

This depends what area you live and if you have the salon do it or a private seamstress.

I live in central USA and have had brides who insisted on using the salon's seamstress (took about 2-4 weeks for them to do it and cost around $150 - $200) and others who used an outside seamstress (took about 2 weeks average and cost $100 - $150) and then others that used a private seamstress I recommended, who gives discounts to my brides and they got theirs in about 10 days and the costs ranged from $25 - $100)

In your area (coastal) it will probably be alot higher than here, so just be sure to shop around and make sure they have worked with bridal gowns before.... some of the materials used in those gowns are ALOT harder to work with.

Good Luck

Mine needed to be shortened and let out a bit. Also I had a lining added to the sheer part (above the bust and the short sleeves). Cost about 200. That was over four years ago.

It cost me about 100 to shorten my dress and to let the chest out. It maybe more where you live. Get an estimate if you can from the sales clerk.

The price varies but it is cheaper to go thru a private seamstress than a bridal shop. Sometimes if yo ask a bridal store or outlet they have a list of private/ home seamstress'.
