there are two different ways for a naval blockade
- close to the coast so you don't need al lot of ships to block the harbors , you re ships are almost at the entrance of the harbor and you re ships can so easy control everybody that leaves. Just keep a major fleet with more in the back at see so that this force can intercept every fleet of the enemy that is breaking through the blockade . This is done by the British in the war against napoleon to blockade the french coast .

- a blockade at see away from the coast so that a cordon is put around the country . here you have to survai a must larger surface but this is not a real problem with the mordern day material just you boots across the see and if you have some subs than they can have a closer look at what leaves the harbours and intercept the one's that got trou the cordon

Your question needs to be more specific. A blockade depends largly on how much coastline you need to blockade. During the US Civil War there were over 100 ships of every type blockading the Southern Coast. As to ship types the faster the ship themore area it can cover. This would reduce the overall amount of ships needed. During the Cuban Missle Crisis, the US Navy really didn't have that many ships. This was because the area being blockaded was fairly small and the ships involved were alot faster than those used in previous blockades. Provide more information as to where your blockade is taking place.

Blockade is only effective if the bordering countries are on your side then all you need is to blockade the country's sea access. A good instance is the North Koreans. The number of ships depends on how big an area of sea access North Korea has, but China must help by blockading any land transports from China.

It depends on how big the seaport of the country your trying to block. Usually it's a fleet that does the job. If it's a huge coast, your gonna need to deploy a pretty large fleet of ships to cover the area so they can turn back any merchant ships trying to get through. Also, they're gonna need enough ships in case the country being blockaded tries to attack them.

I could answer that question, but then I'd have to kill you.

Why are you asking this question?
