In some slang vernacular, the police are known as 5-0. I used to know why this was, but forgot. Anyone care to help me remember the answer to this question...? Thanks.

The characters in the original 1960s TV show were assigned to a unit of the police department called 5-0 (Five Oh). I don't recall if the 5-0 Unit was based on a real HPD unit or if it was made up for the show. The term 5-0 eventually became Drug-Thug slang for Police, but I don't recall that happening until the 1980s.
