You can get a lot of dependable cars for under $10,000
I would recommend one of the following:
1. 2003 Buick Century, the best initial quality of any car ever made
2. 2001 Ford Taurus, A very dependable car and since there were a lot of them made parts are readily available
3. 1999 Mercury Cougar, A excellent style that handles well.
4. 1998 to 2003 Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet/Geo Prism another fine dependable automobile.
5. Honda Accord/ Acura Legend A teen favorite with excellent quality.

try autotrader.com or the newspaper.
P.S. My daughter's first car was a really cool looking immaculate 20 year old Toyota Stationwagon that we bought for two thousand dollars....She loved it and drove it for 4 months until she was rear-ended and then sideswiped by a hit& run driver high on crystal meth. Her car spun out smashing through a storefront as the perpetrator fled the scene. That stationwagon SAVED HER LIFE!!!!!! She would have been dead, or completly disfigured at the least, in any of the "cool" little sports cars, or even any of todays cars that are not built like tanks. She suffered only minor injuries, and lots of emotional trauma....but I can not say enough how important it is to make sure their first car is a BIG and safe one. Nothing more precious than our kids.....
Sorry for telling you this upsetting story, but I just feel it's my chance to possibly help save another daughters life.

I bought My Lexus ES off of E Bay.

I got it for an astounding price, and it was delivered right to my door.
There are LOADS of used and pre-owned cars out there, and you can get great deals off the site, providing that your seller is well rated, and reputable.

Ask around at work. Many people would gladly sell a car to your family for a fair price, and you would be aware of the previous condition. My little brother bought his car from one of my dad's employees and he was very satisfied, and liked the way he had prior information about it--such as the previous owner was a non-smoker, and had never been in a wreck with it...

Oh what a struggle. Went through that ordeal with my son in January. We went to used car shops, and what helped the most is had a mechanic go over the car before you buy.. we saved ourself A LOT of money even though it costed for them to check it out. It's hard to tell what will fall off of a used car. What a struggle. Good luck, I HATE searching for used cars with the heat of seven suns.

save yourself the T R O U B L E of buying used as I'm sure you will be losing A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY on REPAIRS. Trust me. Unless you plan on buying a nice used benz or something. Just buy a chevy aveo. cost around $13,000 with alot of options. comes with 100,000 miles powertrain warranty from GM for free.
good gas mileage,
stylish,
reliable,
good warranty,
cheaper than scion, toyota yaris, and better than ford focus.
otherwise good luck..and i mean that.

I don't know where you are, but I found repossessed cars at American General Finance for between 500 and 1,000 dollars! I just happened to be in a store next to them and saw all the signs on the cars.
