to me..."I remember when you use to like me!"...i said..."i don't remember..."...Honest to God, i do not even remember his as a friend, so he was an acquaintance...should i have said, to not hurt his feelings.."I'm sorry, i don't recall that!"...what is best to say...because i really have searched my mind and think some one just 'MADE THAT UP!!! We did not speak the rest of the evening...

First off, what he said wasn't very polite and was probably meant to catch you off-guard (which he obviously did). The best response to this is one that is lighthearted and humorous and non-committal. You can start with "really now? that's interesting. so, did I stalk you?" Try to find out what he recalls about it by asking follow up questions. It's been such a long time ago that the both of you can laugh about it (if it really did happen) or you could just tease him that he's making that up.

Did you ever think that he may have just made that up so that he could get to talk to you? It might be one of those reunion pick up lines.

People's memories do funny things to them. He was probably transferring his feelings for you way back when and remembering that it was the other way around.
You probably just should have said "I'm sorry, That was so long ago. I don't remember who I liked..." and left it at that.
