I recently started seeing a psychiatrist, and I was scared also. But afterward, it was ok.
They ask you about your history (drug/alcohol abuse, prior suicide attempts, any medical history {blood pressure, diabetes etc} and if you have ever seen a dr before and if you have what did they do for you). Then they move on to how you are feeling right now, and how u have been feeling in the past few weeks. If, for example in my case, you have depression, they will ask you abuot when it started to get worse, what seemed to bring it on, how often you are crying, etc. If its anxiety, they'll ask you anxiety related questions (what makes it worse, better, how frequent its occuring, etc)
I wouldn't be too scared. The more scared you are, the harder it will be to wait for the appt. and the more likely you'll cancel the appt. Just relax. They won't talk about anything that makes you terribly uncomfortable at first if u dont want to. My dr is great. She lets me choose the topic now that I've gone a few times. Its nice to be able to get somethings out in the open and deal with them.
Wish you tons of luck, hope all is well!

Do not be scared. They are there to help you. I worked 30 years in the field of mental health and know there is a lot of help available.
You are the one who made the initial appointment. Why? You need to be honest and tell them why you call for help. Do not be embarrased because few have not heard the problem before.
You may be asked to fill out a questionnaire or take a "test" that evaluates for issues with your mental health and personality. These are NOT pass fail, rather a guide to where you may need help.
Counseling is basically a conversation between two people, one with education and experience to help the person make decisions and changes. Don't expect their will have a magic wand or give you the answers, rather guide you to see areas of conflict or things to adjust to make you happier with your life.
Relax. You should walk out excited about coming to the next appointment.

by mental health do you mean psychiatrist or psychologist? Usually they want to know why is it that you are there? what is your life is troubling you. why do you think the problem is a problem. They really just want to know what is going on in your life. They want to know the good and bad so they can get a feel for the people you surround yourself with. All depends also if your psychiatrist or psychologist is a talkative one. I have been to one where they just sit there and that suites some others they actually talk and give you suggestion and ask you questions more like having a conversation with someone, feels alittle more comfortable. good luck!

assuming this is a "new patient" appointment, it will be an intake appt...they will ask you many questions ranging from family history to what brought you in to see them, social habits, education, relationships, etc...don't be scared...they just need to be thorough so they can decide what's wrong and how to go about treating it so you can feel better

they will ask you how you are doing and listen to you talk.
they will probably record your visit with a tape recorder.
it is not a scary thing at all.
