I crack my neck all day long. It feels good while I'm doing it, but if and when I overdo it (which is often) by the end of the day, my neck is killing me and I have a headache. I'd love to stop but when you get that feeling (all you crackers know that feeling) it's hard not to do it. Please help!

Cracking any part of your body, especially the knuckles if done too often can result in arthritis when you get old. I used to crack things all the time. How I got over it was just to everytime I would forget and end up cracking my neck or my knuckles I would tell myself in my mind not to do it. Sometimes I would even reward myself for when I did good for a day then a week and so forth. The hardest thing is getting out of the habit. Once you are out, it's easy to never go back to it.

You are absolutely right! You have to stop. This will definitely cause arthritis & could even lead to a ruptured disc hon. Neither of which you want. You may want to try aversion therapy. Put a rubber band on your wrist. Every time that you get the urge to crack your neck, give the rubber band a snap. Eventually this should make you aware of a pattern. When you become aware of when & why you are cracking your neck, you should be able to stop. Good luck

What's really happening when you "crack" your knuckles is that you are either pushing the joint back into or out of its normal position. Joints are the meeting points of two separate bones which are held together by connecting tissues and ligaments. A thick, clear lubricant (made mostly of carbon dioxide and some nitrogen) called synovial fluid is found between the bones. When you stretch or pull your finger to get that desired popping noise, you are causing the bones to pull apart. Pressure is reduced on the synovial fluid and bubbles form that quickly expand and then burst - which is why you get that noise and the "relief" from it.

My mom HATES when i do this.... but it's actually GOOD for your joints. it alleviates the pressure.

Hi GiMo. It may be wise to see a professional. Your family Chiropractor can evaluate your neck, determine the reason you keep feeling the need to crack it, and properly adjust your neck to correct the underlying problem.

Best wishes and good luck.

P.S. the other responder is incorrect, manipulating a joint does not cause arthritis, but it may prevent it!
