Polytheism became intellectually unjustifiable and also unfashionable with Socrates' deconstruction of the Athenian state religion.

Polytheism, or the belief in many Gods, had died away in the transition between Medeval and Colonial times. Cultures in which believed in Polytheism had been invaded, migrated, emmigrated, and other such methods of cultural diffusion. Christianity, Islam, Jeudism, all three were monothelthic, whiched appealed the masses of people. The major cause of the dissappearance of Polytheism, was that the more powerful countries, empires, and cultures had addopted one of these three religions. Notice, how the modern Oriental Countries, have polytheism at a higher belief choice, though the three main religions are present - These countries were not heavily influenced by forgein reign, and withstood their time-tested polytheism.
Modern day Polytheism is rare, as the average person wants a -single- absolute goal to attach too. Though I cannot speak for everyone, many studies have shown this. The thought of a single, all-creating God seems to be more "Acceptable" amoung socieities, with a single dogma to the one ultimate being in which they believe in makes living in a society that much "Easier" [Apparently.] The belief simply died out due to the major educational advances that have occured over the years. Science was on the heels of religion, and many people thought it was only possible to have a single, all-powerful being in which was beyond the mortal Coil.
Well, this is my input - But remember, I'm a bit of an Agnostic - I am -far- from religious.

Nothing much really. The Chinese taoists for example believes in the existence of different gods and goddesses . Thay're still believe on it until today and still the Chinese are living productive lives. The Hindus are polytheistic yet their country and society is doing fine. In Buddhism, there are higher beings commonly designed as gods, Devas, yet Buddhism is still being considered as a very peaceful religion. Japanese worship their ancestor's spirits and different nature spirits called the "kami". Yet we know that Japan is one of today's industrial giants.
It's not really about believing on many gods or no gods at all, it's still about how productive and constructive you are in your society.

There are still many religions that do. Anything considered "Christian" (the broad term for anyone Catholic, Protestant, etc) is monotheistic but, Native American religions as well as most Pacific Islander religions are polytheistic. Although Pagans have traditionally been thought of as being polytheistic, its really just one god with 2 separate forms.

I believe Rome happened to it.
Actually there are still many polytheistic religious out there. Hinduism is the most popular one. Shintoism is apparently pretty popular in Japan and other parts of Asia too.

You say this as if there is only one belief system in existence. There are many different cultures that believe in many different religions...and many who do not believe in any at all. I am assuming you are American, because it seems that a huge majority of us Americans have forgotten that we live on earth...which extends far beyond our borders.
