Take as a given that our invasion of Iraq was unprovoked. Is an unprovoked invasion characteristic of U.S. foreign policy throughout history, or is it a change from the norm? I believed the former, but having recently learned about our invasion of Canada in the War of 1812, I have begun to doubt.

Come to think of it, I can't think of any example of U.S. military activity that was provoked, except for Pearl Harbor and WWII.

"An affluent aggressively brutal growing faction makes no bones about proclaiming their intent to take-over the world" -- sounds like the U.S. to me.

Let's see: the War with Spain, the annexation of Hawaii, the creation of Panama, Most of the political police actions after WWII, the guerrilla wars of the Phillippines from 1898 to 1930, the war of 1848 with Mexico, Vietnam, intrevention in Iran, the Diminican Republic, the coup in Chile, ...I suppose you could argue that case.

Yes and thanks to us you have a "White House" In 1846 the US invaded Mexico, they were going to attack Canada but thought better of it. Just about every War the US has been involved with has been a war of agression.
The "Spanish-American War", Spain had agreed to allUS demands but the US wanted to control, the Philippines, Purto Rico, & Cuba, so they attacked. Teddy R. & the charge up San JUan Hill, a Farce. "Remember the Maine" Her boilers blew up in Havana Harbour, but it was a great ralling cry. It was all BS. It backed the US plans for building an empire which continues to this very day.
Sorry, the article below is repeated

It all depends on your definition of "aggression". Every US President who has been involved in a war with a foreign country has done so in the name of defending America. Thomas Jefferson sent the US Navy/marines to Tripoli, Libya to kill Muslim pirates who were raiding US shipping in the Mediterranean and it worked. Was that aggression or was that defense? I think Theodore Roosevelt said it best about American foreign policy/war: "Speak softly and carry a big stick". Meaning don't act like an arrogant SOB when using diplomacy but let everyone know that you are willing to use the full force of the US military if you have to.

We have a new element to consider, that is survival. When an affluent aggressivly brutal growing faction makes no bones about proclaiming their intent to take-over the world and eliminate US, Israel we definately better step up our interest.
lobo-you are right-on my only ques is why does it seem our troops are short-handed thus getting nowhere and dying--this is puzzling considering the opposition

Unprovoked? 9/11 was provoking enough for me. The world is a better place without Saddam.

Unprovoked, HUH

1. We defeated Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War.
2. By doing so, we have the right to dictate the terms of his surrender.
3. Since we were the stronger power, what we say goes.
4. Part of that agreement was Saddam was to allow UN weapon inspectors unfettered access.
5. Saddam refused to honor this part of the agreement.
6. Saddam used chemical weapons on the Kurds in the North.
7. Since Saddam breached the contract, we did not have to honor ours.
8. War is on, we finished the job.

Try this for unprovoked.

Unless you missed it, the Islamic Extremists have been saying for many years that every non Muslim must convert or die.
They have been carrying out attacks against us for many years.
If that is unprovoked, I must miss the meaning of the word.
Read a little before you go off with your uninformed rhetoric.

Given that we retaliate, i doubt whether we're always the aggressor. It more like we we're seeking retribution of 2,000 dead americans. The iraqi invasion was a knee jerk response to 9/11. I know it wasn't the right thing to do, but, oh well. Heaven help the middle east if there's a WMD detonated on continental US soil.

Only after 12 UN mandates were violated and our planes shot at everyday. We could have continued to be like WIMPY Bill and let Saddam continue to give us the finger but that is not the American way.
