I checked prices from a few sources and came up with the following:
California, ING, 10 year level term, $500,000, Preferred Plus rate
Never smoked: $215.00 annually
Current smoker: $670.00 annually
California, ING, 10 year level term, $500,000, Standard Rate
Never smoked: $405.00 annually
Current smoker: $895.00 annually
Remember that you are considered a smoker if you have ever smoked – even if it was 20 years ago. Among smokers, insurance underwriters typically break down your cigarette use based on how many you smoke a day (more than 20? less than 20?) and when you last smoked.
For a comprehensive review of options available to smokers and non-smokers, check out MostChoice.com. It's difficult to say, because the quotations from different companies vary.
Why don't you just buy one from a company that charges the same, no matter smoker or non-smoker status?

...a dollar figure or a percentage? Typically a smoker will pay 30-50% more for life ins. premiums than a non-smoker.

I don't have a rate sheet handy, check on line, you can come up with a number, my guess, about 12% to 15%, pretty high, also women mortality is about 3 years longer than men, so their rate, equal age, is lower.
