I went to the dentist this afternoon to have an old silver filling taken out and replaced with the composite one. I noticed my tongue was sore on that side & I just looked in the mirror & I saw like little silver metal pieces lodged in my tongue (cut) and it's all red but not really bad but I'm afraid it'll get worse & will the pieces come out on their own? Anyone else had this?

It is very rare to actually get shards of amalgam that get lodged into your tongue when they are being drilled out; however, stranger things have happened! Try rinsing your mouth thoroughly and see if the pieces still remain. Often small pieces can be left and just adhere to the tongue and soft tissues. If they are still there, call your dentist tomorrow and have it checked out. Leaving them there will cause an irritation that could get worse. It they are stuck in there, your dentist will be able to easily remove them with small Sterile pliers.

I'm a dentist.

The metal dust is your old amalgam. Rinse your mouth out thoroughly.

As for the cut on your tongue, that happens fairly commonly. We usually catch these injuries quickly, and stop the drill before your tongue is significantly wounded. Usually, the injury is very superficial and much like a canker sore.

You can do one of two things if it is a piece of metal lodged in your tongue try getting some clean tweezers and see if you can get it out. Or just go back to your dentist and have them get it out or smooth it out.

SOME OF THE PREVIOUS SUGGESTIONS BY THE OTHER DENTIST ARE VERY GOOD. TO MAKE THE SORE TONGUE FEEL BETTER RINSE WITH SOME HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 50:50 WITH WATER. RINSING THIS WAY WILL HELP TO HEAL THE TONGUE. IF YOU STILL SEE THE SILVER AFTER RINSING, SEE YOUR DENTIST.

That could be pieces of the old amalgam, it's not common, because if you remove them carefully and with suction, they shouldn't be there, but it's the only logical cause that I can think right now, if this area of your tongue is not hurting, try to brush it with your tooth brush and try to go to your dentist.
