I asked a similar question earlier at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsaNFcp2ztuh7mZyI10wv4_sy6IX?qid=20061106070237AATO7kl

It was a bit impersonal, in that I was curious to see if people were willing to sacrifice the life of a stranger for God (of any religion).

Most everyone knows the story of Abraham. God demanded that Abraham sacrifice his son, Isaac. It was only a test of faith, but Abraham believed in it, and he prepared to spill his own son's blood. God was only testing Abraham.

If you felt that your god would want you to kill your child, could you go through with it?

Please no answers about how Christ was the only blood needed. God has changed his mind in the Bible before, so there's not even a guarantee that Christ is the last of the blood sacrifices. That also only applies to Christians. Jews? Muslims? Hindus?

No possible way. I'm a Christian, but I just can't get that story. I think this is one of the most perverse stories in the Bible. Either God is a monster to ask this, or the story just doesn't belong in the Bible.

You asked, "If you felt that your god would want you to kill your child, could you go through with it?"

Well, if I only have my feelings to go by, I would NOT go through with it. What I would need would be a clear voice from God, like the one Abraham heard ever so clearly. You mentioned that there's no guarantee that Christ is the last of the blood sacrifices. I ask, "Why not?" In fact Jesus was THE FIRST AND LAST of any HUMAN blood sacrifice for God. Isaac is not counted simply because God NEVER intended for Isaac to die at all, it was simply to test Abraham as you correctly noted, and it was meant to teach Abraham that God would provide the needed ultimate sacrifice.

Any God who would ask that of his follower is evil, pure and simple. If you believe the bible then it seems God has spent millenia proving the true extent of his madness and evil to his followers and mankind as a whole. The " Holy Bible" may very well be the most blood soaked tome in history,Stephen King has nothing on God for sheer bloodshed and horror. The book might as well have been written in blood. Makes one wonder if perhaps even Satan may have been misrepresented, perhaps he wanted God to restrain his bloodlust and that was his crime.

people sacrifice their children every day to their god - it's called abortion, and the god is secular humanism.

I can see how people would read the story of Abraham and Isaac and be repulsed..however remember that God had previously promised Abraham that ALL NATIONS would be blessed through Isaac. So Abraham knew that either God would raise Isaac from the dead, or not require the sacrifice, because God will be true to His promise.

BTW, the Bible does say Christ was the final sacrifice (1 Peter 3:18, Christ was offered ONCE FOR ALL).

no I would not simply because of the fact I am not Abraham.

Abraham had frequent prophecy's from G-d and G-d had done obvious miracles for him.

He had good history to trust and put his faith in G-d. I do not have such a history so if I received a message telling me to kill my child I would assume my mind was playing tricks on me.

Anyone that would sacrifice or even consider sacifising their child for *God* should never have children in the first place. They need a mental hospital.

No and i would seriously consider the psychotic voices in my head that would have suggested that.. because mentally healthy people would never consider it. Only those whacked out religious freaks would answer Yes to this question.

All in all... Good question... it definitely shows who is sane and who should be institutionalized.

You talk so much nonsense!
It seems that you already know the answer to your question; so why ask?...you egoistic snake!
God did not allow Abraham to sacrifice his son because God needs no human sacrifice.
Remember that Abraham lived among pagans and he thought that God wanted him to sacrifice humans as the ancient pagans did.
The old testament can make you go crazy if you don't understand how to read it. Now go learn how to read the Old Testament...or leave it alone!

I'm an agnostic, but as far as kids are concerned, I'm with the ancient Greeks and would deposit all newborn kids at the top of a high mountain, and let the strong make it down and the weak, die.
There's too many people in this world, and that would be a good start.
Secondly, all unwanted catholic newborn should be deposited on the steps of the nearest catholic church so they can take care of them instead of keeping millions in poverty trying to feed kids they don't want or need!
