My son is 16 years old, and he is the best son I could ever ask for. He is so mature for his age, and he has been trying so hard to get a job, he has applied to so many places and has had many interviews, but people just dont want minors. He even offered to contribute to the bills, and pay for gas money! He also gets pretty good grades, has never fallen below an 80 overall, which I can't really argue too much with, since he is very bad in math. Since he is getting a job soon, should I allow him to have a cell phone? He offered to pay for it, by the way.

he should start a small business. like window cleaning for store front windows, or car detailing washing and cleaning cars for people , or dog walking for people who are away, There are many service businesses that make nice money. make some cards and before you know it you will get calls.

Your son sounds like he's ready for a cell phone especially if he will be working. The world is a crazy place and a cell phone would probably offer you some assurance while he's at work or in town. If I were you I would pay for it. That could be a reward for him finally getting a job and for being so responsible.

if he is as mature as u say he is then get him cell phone especially since he will have a job even tho his place of work will have a phone but the cell phone is a direct line to him and comes in handy in cases of emergency
as far as the job tell him to hang in there keep applyin and annoy the crap out of the personel dept of whatever business he applies for he wants to be the first they think of when an opening come up (i called every other day and a few times a week i dropped in and ask if they had an opening still took awhile to get a job but it worked- had the same job now for 2 1/2 yrs)

Sounds like a good kid! When he get a job the best thing you can teach him is to save 10% of what he earns. After that, let him do as he wants with the money. 16 seems to be old enough for a cell phone.

If he has a job and will pay his own bill why not? I would suggest though that he save some of his earnings but if he's as mature as you say he is you won't even have to suggest it. The way I look at it is it's his money to do with as he pleases so long as whatever he spends it on is legal. That's how we did our kids and all 4 turned out ok.

It's nice he asked for one and offered to pay.
Kids don't need permission for much nowdays.
He could be like alot of kids and just get one ..who'd know?
Sounds like a really great kid.Good on'ya mom.
It is hard to find a job, at least one that the pay is
worth your while.(Price of gas an all.)
There are agencys that can help...on the internet.
Jobs list and people to contact.
Good Luck to you both.

Great way for him to begin to establish credit. One by one allow him to show his mature handling of adult matters like: working, paying for gas, bill paying, keeping up the grades and so forth. He seems to be headed down the road well, just keep an eye on him so that he doesn't slip and miss paying some bill on time. Sit him down and help him to see how to do budgets and save. Keep him from falling into the misery of debt. Get him started on the right track from now on. Try to not co-sign on anything. He needs to put up the deposits, pay the higher interest rates to get himself established. This way, if he falls, he doesn't take you down with him. He'll just have to learn the do's and don'ts on his own. He'll wise up quicker that way.

he sounds like a very responsible and mature young man.....i would allow him a phone...but i would consider getting a prepaid phone and allowing him a particular amount per month...even the most trusting of children get a little too excited when they first have a phone and run up big bills.....by having a prepaid you will always be able to contact him but the amount of calls he can make out are limited....

If he pays for it and stays as responsible as he sounds I would let him. Just make sure you get him a good plan with plenty of anytime minutes or get an unlimited plan since kids sometimes forget their time limitations and can go way over on minutes. Oh how I wish my 16 year old were as responsible as yours! You are so fortunate.

Why don't you get him a pay as you go phone. Then you don't have to sign up for a plan and he can't rack the bill way up. He can pay for the pay as you go cards and if you want to you can add time if he deserves it. No commitment and a good training for him to learn to pay for his own cell phone.
